TUM Alumna Simran Khokha studied Integrated Circuit Design at TUM Asia. The dual Master’s program of TUM and NTU in Singapore proved to be crucial for her career advancement. Today, she is one of the global innovators in semiconductor technology. Her second great passion is the promotion of women in the technology industry.
When her siblings were watching their favorite TV shows, Simran Khokha was drawing in the living room. At the age of five, she watched her first Ted Talk about electronics. “That decision opened a window into a fascinating world for me,” she recalls. She watched the TED youth video “How to Sketch with Electronics” by Leah Buechley from the MIT Media Lab countless times.

Simran Khokha realized that circuit design was a promising way for her to combine her two passions, art and problem solving, in an ideal way. When she graduated from high school, there was no doubt in her mind about choosing a suitable field of study. “I knew right away that I wanted to study electronics and learn how electronic designs work.”

Unique combination

Simran Khokha completed her Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering at Delhi University in 2017. She then moved to Singapore to complete a Master’s degree in Integrated Circuit Design at TUM Asia. Initially, the course demanded a lot of stamina from her, as she was not used to the fast study and examination cycle.

But the challenging course was definitely worth it. “At TUM Asia, I was able to get to know both the Asian and the European way of teaching and learning,” she says. ”The close-knit alumni community and the large network were very helpful in helping me to get my dream internship and then a good job with an international tech giant in Singapore.”

Mastermind in semiconductor innovation

Since graduating in 2018, Simran Khokha has become a prominent figure in the global semiconductor industry. In Singapore, she worked as a design engineer for leading technology companies. At AMD, she worked on the groundbreaking 7nm technology. At Realtek and STMicroelectronics, she was involved in the development of chips for autonomous vehicles and AI/ML applications. She has developed advanced chip integrations for Apple and Google.

No wonder Infineon Technologies, Germany’s largest semiconductor manufacturer based in Neubiberg near Munich, hired Simran Khokha as Product Manager with a kiss on the hand. Since 2024, Simran Khokha has been responsible for Infineon as Product Manager for the Automotive Microcontroller Units (MCUs) division in the Europe-Arabia-Africa economic region.

Women in the tech industry are crucial for innovation and progress.

Although Simran Khokha had worked with bright minds at leading companies in Singapore on the latest technologies, she longed for a change. The move to Germany was to bring the hoped-for change of perspective. “I wanted to get to know the other side of the world and the culture that I had gotten a taste of during my time at TUM Asia,” she explains. ”Being hired by my dream employer Infineon was like the cherry on top.”

Advocate for diversity and inclusion

Her work on technological innovations to improve society is what drives Simran Khokha in her life. But she is equally passionate about promoting women in the technology industry. Whether in Singapore or now in Germany, she has had consistently positive experiences with all her employers in terms of diversity, inclusion, teamwork and mutual support.

Nevertheless, Simran Khokha is aware that for many women in technology professions, male dominance in the industry and stereotypes can pose challenges. “I am a staunch feminist,” she says, ”supporting women in their professional development, achieving their independence and their goals is something that is very close to my heart.”

For years, Simran Khokha has held leadership roles in organizations and initiatives such as “Women Who Code Singapore”, “United Women Singapore” or “Girls in Tech” and mentors aspiring female professionals in mentoring programs and via webinars. She has worked with universities in Singapore, India, Germany and Kenya. She founded the first women’s network at her former employer STMicroelectronics. She is also actively involved in the “Future Work” initiative at Infineon and is a volunteer in the women’s network. On November 19, 2024, she will take part in the webinar “Q&A: Starting a Career in Germany” at TUM as a speaker.

In 2024, Simran Khokha was included in the “Heroes Role Model List” supported by YouTube. This global list by INvolve – The Inclusion People recognizes pioneering women in companies who are driving positive change for women in business. “I want to inspire women to pursue careers in the tech industry,” she says, ”because women in tech are critical to its innovation and progress.”
